In 2020, Black Cat GIS and HARC developed a survey technique to get detailed information on what kinds of trash were found around the Houston- Galveston area. After lots of trial and error in the field, the new protocol was used to help set up a new statewide database.
The Texas Litter Database is a joint project between HARC, Keep Texas Beautiful, and the Garver, Black, Hilyard Family Foundation. STOP (Study, Track, remOve, Prevent) surveys are reported through the Texas Litter Database at txlitter.org.
This program is funded by the Garver, Black, Hilyard Family Foundation, which allows us to offer all trainings for FREE.
ON-SITE, DOWN AND DIRTY TRAINING SESSIONS
On-site training sessions will periodically be offered in the Texas Upper Coast. We hope to offer at minimum one training per month and plan to move the location around to better serve our volunteers. If participant demand is great enough, we will expand! These events are open to the public. Pre-registration is required.
Trainings will be limited to 10-15 people due to COVID and social distancing requirements. All attendees MUST wear a mask during the event and follow all CDC recommendations.
REQUEST A PRIVATE TRAINING FOR YOUR GROUP
If you'd like to schedule a in-person training for your group, please use the registration link to the left.
For now, we can only accommodate on-site, in-person trainings within a 1-2 hour drive from Houston.
However, STOP and the Texas Litter Database are meant to cover the entire state. You can request a live Zoom meeting with your group no matter the distance!
For an in-person training the following criteria must be met:
-
Location must be outdoors ONLY.
-
Attendees must agree to wear a mask and follow CDC guidelines.
-
Location should be safe for attendees to walk around (away from heavy traffic, no steep banks or dangerous footing, etc.).
-
Location must be either a public space OR if on private property, provide written proof of owner's permission to use site.
-
Any arrangements with local government or agencies for site rental must be handled by the group requesting the training.
